Case Brief Instructions
You will write two case briefs in this course. Each will review a US Supreme Court case that
focused on criminal investigation procedures. Case brief writing instructions may be found

The link also contains a sample brief here your reference. Make sure to add a final section of
analysis. This section is where you show me that you understand the importance and
relevance of the case to criminal investigations. What would our system look like if the case
had not occurred? How did it change procedures? Analyze the case in terms of its impact
on the criminal justice system. This analysis section should be at least half of the second
page.
Briefs should be two full pages detailing case facts with one-half of the second page
consisting of your analysis. They will be due at 11:00pm on the due dates listed in the
syllabus. Each brief is worth 50 points. Late briefs will not be accepted. The list of cases
from which to choose follows these instructions.
Formatting Guidelines:
Ø Briefs must be:
o typed,
o two full pages containing the case brief components with one-half of the
second page consisting of your analysis,
o single-spaced,
o 12 point font, with
o 1” margins all around.
o All assignments must be submitted in .doc, .docx, or .rtf format. Others will not
be accepted. I cannot grade what I cannot read/open.
