Week 6 Discussion – Logical and Physical Design

48 Unread replies48 Replies

In  order to ensure optimal database performance, the logical and physical  design should consider the user requirements thoroughly. Suppose you  have been hired to transform a conceptual model into a logical model for  a sales database.

  • Describe the specific steps that you must perform in order to appropriately construct the database model.
  • Speculate the risks that might present themselves for each step mentioned, and how you would avoid or mitigate those risks.
  • Be sure to respond to at least one of your classmates’ posts.

Hello class,

When designing a database for optimal performance, there are three  levels of data modeling: logical data modeling, conceptual data  modeling, and physical data modeling.

The features needed in logical data modeling:

  1. Entity names.
  2. Foreign key.
  3. Primary key.

The features needed for conceptual data modeling:

  1. Entity relationships.
  2. Entity names.

The following steps can be used in the construction of the database model.

  1. Identify the entities: Identify entities such as events, people, and so on.

The risk: efficient identification of entities such as events, locations, and people has to occur.

  1. Identify relationships: check for relationships such as customers to sales, customers to shops, and many more.

The risk: it must be arranged in a definite order.

  1. Identify attributes: Check for attributes such as addresses, names, and so on.
  2. Define datatype for the attributes: Datatypes should be defined for the attributes that were identified.
  3. Normalization: Involving the 1NF, 2NF, and 3NF.

Capstone: Database modeling involves the following; domain, functionality, entities, relationships, and design.

RISKS TO AVOID;

  1. Avoid the analysis of the basic requirements.
  2. Users should be given specifications.
  3. Change should be examined in businessV
