Week 3 Discussion:
Scholarly journals aim to advance knowledge in a particular field by publishing in-depth, mostly peer-reviewed research studies (Walden University, n.d.). The Walden Library is an excellent resource to utilize throughout this program because it has a variety of scholarly journals and databases to choose from. The library has 15 databases for nursing majors (Walden University Library, n.d.). The databases I utilize the most are CINAHL, Medline, APA PsychInfo, and Pubmed.
I searched for a peer-reviewed journal on weight loss interventions for obese adults with type 2 diabetes in the Walden Library. This subject has always interested me and is what I want to focus on for my community when I finish my degree. I am motivated to help obese adults become healthier to prevent complications related to type 2 diabetes. I used the APA PsychInfo database to search for a scholarly article. When searching, I typed the keywords type 2 diabetes, adults, and weight loss into separate search boxes. I then limited the search to full-text and peer-reviewed scholarly journals. I wanted current articles and customized the date range from 2018 to 2023. This process allowed for the amount of articles to be condensed to current, peer-reviewed, and full text. I chose the article by Martenstyn, King, and Rutherford (2020) about weight loss interventions’ impact on overweight and obese adults with type 2 diabetes.
I have had issues finding reliable and current research in my past courses. However, utilizing the resources available to me and adding limitations to the search engine has made it more accessible. The APA Psychinfo database will be helpful for my colleagues because it is a reliable resource with peer-reviewed literature for mental health and behavioral sciences (Walden University Library, n.d.). I recommend using this database when researching scholarly articles because it offers a variety of topics and is straightforward when applying advanced search options.
