If you’ve taken Texas Government with me, you know about Barbara Jordan. Jordan blazed trails as the first African-American since Reconstruction to hold office in the Texas state senate and the first African-American woman ever to hold that position. She then went to Washington D.C. in 1973, after winning a landslide election, to become the first black woman to represent Texas in the U.S. House.  While in Congress, she sat on the Judiciary Committee, where she gave the opening speech during the Committee’s hearing to impeach Richard Nixon. Her speech is considered to be one of the greatest political speeches ever made. 

Now watch her history-making speech. After you watch, respond to what you heard. You may consider these questions: What checks-and-balances does she mention? What does she think about the role of Congress regarding impeachment? What is her reasoning for Congress bringing forth these articles and what is the “standard” she uses? How does she explain the “nature of impeachment” and its role in balancing the government?

Whether or not you have a vested interest in the Public Safety profession, you have probably found yourself, at one point or another, engrossed by a particularly-lurid episode of Dateline or delighted by the edge-of-your-seat excitement in Netflix miniseries like Making a Murderer or When They See Us. This current trend of movies, television series, and podcasts based around real-life murderers and convictions has been dubbed the “true crime boom.” In CrimeReads‘s “True Crime Advice” column, author Tori Telfer explores this recent rash of programming that focuses on the darker sides of our society.   • Tori Telfer argues that America’s current obsession with true crime actually isn’t so new. What is one specific example that she provides to reinforce her claim that these interests and stories have been present in our society much earlier?

Jax is a 66-year-old Caucasian female whose wife has encouraged her to seek treatment. She has never been in therapy before, and has no history of depression or anxiety. However, her alcohol use has recently been getting in the way of her marriage, and interfering with her newly-retired life. She describes drinking increasing amounts over the last year, currently consuming approximately a six-pack of beer per day.
