[Solved] Drastically Cut City Support

[Solved] Drastically Cut City Support

Rona is a huge supporter of Gerry Mitchell in the mayoral campaign. Rona decides to volunteer for Mitchell campaign and is soon asked to speak at various rallies when Mitchell can’t attend. One Saturday evening, Rona is asked to speak before a group of retirees at a local retirement center. As a campaign insider, Rona knows that Mitchell has privately acknowledged that he’s probably going to have to drastically cut city support for a number of programs that help the elderly. Of course, this information has been made public. Rona also realizes that the group she is speaking before would not vote for Mitchell if they knew what his future plans are.

1. If Rona attempts to persuade the retirees without divulging the information about the future cuts, is she a pure persuader or a manipulative persuader?

2. Does a political operative have an ethical obligation, to be honest when the information being disseminated to a group of people isn’t complete?

3. If you were Rona, what would you do?

[Solved] Make Informed Decisions

Imagine that you are preparing a speech on the benefits of a new drug, and you find a direct quotation that clearly establishes your argument. Unfortunately, you soon realize that the source of your quotation is actually lobbyist who works for the pharmaceutical company that manufactures the drug. You really want to use this quotation as your attention-getter, but you realize that the source is clearly biased. Which of the following options do you think is the most ethical? Why?

1. Disregard the quotation and find another way to start your speech.

2. Use the quotation, but acknowledge that the source comes from a paid lobbyist of the pharmaceutical company who manufactures the drug.

3. Use the quotation and just give the name of the source. If your audience is interested in your topic, they’ll do their own research and make informed decisions for themselves.

[Solved] Dhs Aban Runs

[Solved] Dhs Aban Runs

While preparing a speech on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Aban runs across a website that has a lot of useful information. The website has numerous articles and links that all discuss the importance of the different functions of the DHS. Being a good speaker, Aban delves into the website to determine the credibility of the information being provided. Aban quickly realizes that the group sponsoring the website is a fringe-militia group that believes no immigrants should be allowed into the United States. While the information Aban is interested has nothing to do with immigration, he wonders if all the information provided on the website has been distorted to support the organization’s basic cause.

1. Should Aban use the useful information about DHS even though the other information on the website is from an extremist group?

2. Are all sources on the extremist group’s website automatically suspect because of the groups stated anti-immigration stance?

3. Is it ethical for Aban to use any of the information from this website?

4. If Aban was a friend of yours and he showed you the website, how would you tell him to proceed?

[Solved] Without Even Realizing

[Solved] Without Even Realizing

Jonathan sat staring at his computer screen. The previous two days had been the most disastrous weekend of his entire life. First, his girlfriend broke up with him on Friday and informed him that she was dating his best friend behind his back. Then he got a phone call from his mother informing him that his childhood dog has been hit by a car. And if that wasn’t enough, his car died on the way to work, and since it was his third unexcused absence from work, he was fired. In the midst of all these crises, Jonathan was supposed to be preparing his persuasive speech for his public speaking class. Admittedly, Jonathan had had the two weeks prior to work on the speech, but he had not gotten around to it and thought he could pull it together over the weekend. Now at 1:00 a.m. on Monday morning, he finally got a chance to sit down at his computer to prepare the speech he was giving in nine and a half hours. His topic was prison reform. He searched through a number of websites and finally found one that seemed really relevant. As he read through the first paragraph, he thought to himself, this is exactly what I want to say. After two paragraphs the information just stopped, and the website asked him to pay $29.95 for the rest of the speech. Without even realizing it, Jonathan had found a speech mill website. Jonathan found himself reaching for his wallet thinking, well it says what I want it to say, so why not?

1. If you were a student in Jonathan’s class and he confided in you that he had used a speech mill for his speech, how would you react?

2 If you were Jonathan, what ethical choices could you have made?

3. Is it ever ethical to use a speech written by a speech mill?

[Solved] Democratic National Convention Keynote

Objectives to be Met:

  1. Demonstrate your understanding of Aristotle’s ethos, pathos, and logos.
  2. Use Aristotle’s theory to evaluate and critique Barbara Jordan’s speech at the 1976 Democratic National Convention.

Additional Information:

Your paper should:

  1. Show that you have read through AND watched Barbara Jordan’s keynote address at the 1976 Democratic National Convention
  2. Outline Aristotle’s three rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos) in your own words
  3. Examine and evaluate Jordan’s speech at length through the use of this rhetorical perspective.

Paper Organization

  • In total, the first portion of the paper will provide introductory information about the speech such as a summary of what was covered, the political climate at the time of the speech, and some background on Jordan (1/4 of the paper)
  • The second portion will present the rhetorical theory in your own words (i.e. What is ethos? What is pathos? What is logos?) (1/4 of the paper)
  • The final portion will involve you critiquing the speech using the theory (i.e. How does Jordan use ethos? How does Jordan use pathos? How does Jordan use logos?) (1/2 of the paper)

Paper Requirements

The paper should be 3 pages in length, use 1” margins all around, be written in 12-point Times New Roman font, and be double-spaced. Any citations should use APA format and the paper itself should include a “References” page at the end of the paper (this is not included as part of the 4-5 page requirement). No cover page or abstract, please. Let’s save some paper.

To acquaint yourself with APA formatting, please see Purdue University’s APA Style Guide overview. Links to an external site. It is a great resource and easy to navigate. If you have not used it before, the site has other style guides (ex. MLA, Chicago) that may be helpful in other classes. With that said, this stuff is complicated, but try not to overthink it particularly your “References” page which can be as simple as this:
