Initial Post Instructions

Congratulations on successfully finishing the last of the A&P series! Over the course of the last eight weeks we’ve discussed the anatomy and physiology of the Digestive, Urinary, and Reproductive systems. We also discussed nutrition, metabolism, human development, and genetics. And since we began our study of the human body in BIOS251, we have continuously referred to a unifying theme in Anatomy and Physiology; that is, the relationship between structure and function. The idea that “form follows function” has been the foundation of our understanding of the human body and how it sustains life. This common thread throughout the A&P series allows us to look at the “big picture”.

If you remember from BIOS251, one of the fundamental principles of Anatomy and Physiology is the interdependence of all body systems and how the proper function of one system is intimately tied to the proper function of other organ systems, and ultimately the overall homeostasis of the human body.

For the Week 8 discussion of BIOS256, I would like you to go back in time. Think back to previous sessions and consider the various organs and organ systems that were discussed in BIOS251, BIOS252, and BIOS255. Choose one of the following organs or organ systems:

• Integumentary system
• Skeletal system
• Joints
• Muscular system
• Nervous system
• Special senses
• Endocrine system
• Blood and hemodynamics
• Cardiovascular system
• Immune system
• Respiratory system

After you have chosen one of the above organs or organ systems, discuss how it is intricately connected to any of the major topics that were covered this session in BIOS256. How are these systems integrated? How do they work together to contribute to the overall homeostasis of the human body?

For example, in week 1 and 2 we discussed the digestive system, and the importance of intrinsic factor to red blood cell production. One approach would be to discuss the connection between dietary absorption of intrinsic factor, its relationship to vitamin B12, and the maintenance of a healthy hematocrit.

In the medicine and nursing fields the concepts of Health and Illness have been explained using models frameworks. One example is the Hierarchy of Needs by Abraham Maslow.

Preparation

In this assignment, you will be drawing an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) or Database Design Diagram. 

Scenario

Suppose a local college has tasked you to develop a database that will keep track of students and the courses that they have taken. In addition to tracking the students and courses, the client wants the database to keep track of the instructors teaching each of the courses. 

Instructions for the Database Design Diagram

Use any drawing package or any other application you know such as Visio, Word, PowerPoint, or another tool to create the Database Design Diagram. Otherwise, you may draw the diagram by hand with a pen and paper. If you draw the diagram by hand, then take one or more pictures of the diagram with your cell phone or laptop camera, place the images into a Word document, and submit the document. Otherwise, if you use software to create the Database Design Diagram, then take one or more screen captures of the diagram, place the screen captures into a Word document, and submit the document. Submissions that are not in .doc or .docx format will not be graded. Include the following in the document:

• Draw the entities of the database and the attributes of each entity, based on your research and/or common knowledge of a college and the information tracked by a college.
• Create the appropriate relationships between each entity within the diagram.
• Describe any assumptions that you had to make about the business rules in order to create the diagram and the associated relationships.
