Case Study #1. Lake Forest City Schools. K-12 School Division

You are the Vice President of Development at Lake Forest City Schools (LFCS). The school district is over 75 years old, with a solid academic reputation and a large, supportive alumni base. However, fundraising has never been a high priority in the school district. The school receives about $250,000 per year in tax donations. Your mission is to build a development staff as well as a fundraising plan to support the growth and challenges facing the school over the next five years.

This assignment will be completed in two parts. Part one of the assignment is written in such a way that you will address key discussion points through research and elaboration.

Part two of the assignment requires you to compare and contrast two public funding sources (for example, government grants) and two private funding sources (for example, private donations and alumni donations) in K-12 and higher education. You will compare and contrast the eligibility requirements for obtaining each type of funding.

Create a development plan to address short-term and long-term strategies. Include the following:

1. Specify how to make immediate improvements to the chosen fundraising program.
   • What do you intend to use the donations for?
2. Detail two initiatives you will execute to convince community members and K-12 parents or institutions of higher education alumni to support your fundraising effort and increase their contributions to the school.
   • Explain technological and non-technological ways to approach alumni and encourage them to contribute or increase their contributions to the school.
3. Develop a long-term goal to grow the funding.
   • How will you accomplish this goal?
4. Identify two private and public funding entities.

Note: This Assignment is divided into two parts for a total of 8–10 pages. This week, you will complete and submit Part 1 (4–5 pages). You will complete Part 2 (4–5 pages) in Week 8 and submit your entire leadership profile in Week 8.

In recognition of your growth as a leader, you have been given the opportunity to join a professional leadership network. As part of your membership, you must create a unique leadership profile that focuses on your passion and your purpose for leadership, as well as your goals. This is your opportunity to present your leadership reflections and perspectives to others in your network and to create connections that may lead to professional experiences in the future.

To prepare for this Assignment:

• You should first engage in reflection. Self-reflection is an important skill in business, especially for a leader or an aspiring leader. There are a number of different models of reflection that can be utilized; however, one of the more commonly used models is the 5R Framework for Reflection (Bain, et al., 2002), which focuses on five defined stages of reflection: reporting, responding, relating, reasoning, and reconstructing. Using this framework will enable you to produce a critically engaging reflection based on your experiences. Refer to the following table for more information about the framework:

For the first part of your leadership profile, you will describe how you can/will apply positive leadership skills in pursuit of social change, be it in your professional or personal life. Be sure to incorporate the following:

Emotional Intelligence

• Analyze the importance of the five elements of emotional intelligence in being a strong leader: self-awareness, self-regulation, social skills, empathy, and motivation. Specifically:
  • How do these elements affect the leader-follower relationship?
  • How do they improve a leader’s ability to promote change?

Developing a Diverse and Inclusive Environment

• Analyze the interdependency of diversity and inclusion.
• Examine what diversity and inclusion look like in the workplace, as well as the benefits of having/developing a diverse working environment.
• Summarize how you have worked/will work as a leader to promote diversity and inclusion in your work environment.

The Power of Networking

• Based on your personal and professional experiences, examine the relationship of establishing and maintaining a professional network to your own leadership.
  • How can a strong network benefit both a rising leader and an established leader?
  • How can the use of networks enhance one’s ability to become an agent of positive social change?

Scenario

The director of operations for PMI had identified that your organization was not prepared for the COVID-19 pandemic. When the states of Michigan and Maine shut down, your organization was not prepared to work remotely. It took weeks to set up new laptops, there was no corporate VPN, and no formal training was done to prepare employees to work remotely. As the chief technical officer (CTO), you have been asked to explore using Amazon Web Services® (AWS), as your current data center needs to be updated, and discussions have been going on regarding moving the corporate HQ once the current lease expires early next year. You have been tasked to work with management to develop a business continuity plan that will address a possible move to AWS and to ensure that the organization and its employees are prepared for any future emergencies. You will also need to present your idea for an Intranet/Extranet to better share data with the employees, vendors, and consultants.

 Instructions

Based on your research, write a 2- to 3-page business continuity plan that will explain how AWS can be utilized for remote work. Be sure to base your recommendation on supporting research; use the Library to seek further information and sources for your arguments.

 Requirements

The written  paper should be 2–3 pages long, not including the title page and references. As you research the assignment topic material, all of the pages must have citations and references as appropriate. No more than one direct quotation (of 40 words or more), table, or figure is allowed per page, and bullet lists without substantial narrative included are strongly discouraged. There should be no spelling or grammar errors.

 

Reflective Discussion 1

1. Why do we need theory in Public Administration? Discuss what theory is and how and why we use it. Identify at least 2 theorists and their theoretical perspective.  Comment on what they have to say.  Do you agree or disagree and why.
2. Discuss the role on public administration in the American context and contrast it to the role of public administration in another country of your choice. What similarities and differences can you identify.  Do you believe other countries’ administrative systems are becoming “Americanized” as a result og globalization?  Why or why not?
3. How do you define home?

Globalization and immigration have made the world both a much smaller place and a much larger place.  Low-cost travel and governments supportive of immigration have made the world a smaller place and made it easier for cross border business as well as reduced barriers for immigrants and refugees to move from their home country to other places for new and potentially better opportunities.  Technological advances and digital communication have made it much easier for those newcomers to remain connected to their homeland thus potentially crating barriers to full integration and assimilation into their new homeland.  Ethnic, political, and religious based violence along with crises such as the Covid 19 pandemic have, among some, instilled fear and potentially hatred of those that look different or talk different.

Watch the included video clip.  For the purposes of this discussion think of what they describe as ‘the burn’ as a much more deadly form of Covid-19.  Consider the message of the clip as a metaphor about globalization, our world today and a debate about our growing interconnectedness within and between our communities and public administrators.  Discuss this impact and answer the question: How do you define home?  Issues to consider include fear and hatred, communion and sharing, growing interconnectedness, science, and duty to home.  What defines your home today and why?  Has your home changed as a result of these factors?
