Assessing Information System Vulnerabilities and Risk

You are an information assurance management officer (IAMO) at an organization of your choosing. One morning, as you’re getting ready for work, you see an email from Karen, your manager. She asks you to come to her office as soon as you get in. When you arrive to your work, you head straight to Karen’s office. “Sorry for the impromptu meeting,” she says, “but we have a bit of an emergency. There’s been a security breach at the Office of Personnel Management.”

We don’t know how this happened, but we need to make sure it doesn’t happen again, says Karen. You’ll be receiving an email with more information on the security breach. Use this info to assess the information system vulnerabilities of the Office of Personnel Management.

At your desk, you open Karen’s email. She’s given you an OPM report from the Office of the Inspector General, or OIG. You have studied the OPM OIG report and found that the hackers were able to gain access through compromised credentials. The security breach could have been prevented if the Office of Personnel Management, or OPM, had abided by previous auditing reports and security findings. In addition, access to the databases could have been prevented by implementing various encryption schemas and could have been identified after running regularly scheduled scans of the systems.

Karen and the rest of the leadership team want you to compile your findings into a Security Assessment Report, or SAR. You will also create a Risk Assessment Report, or RAR, in which you identify threats, vulnerabilities, risks, and likelihood of exploitation and suggested remediation.

The Case of Lonnie and Dorothy

Individuals or families who need case management services do so because they have a number of problems. Like Lonnie and Dorothy, they may “get by” for a period of time. At some point, their problems escalate, multiply, or both, making it difficult to cope. It is at the end of this case, when Lonnie is beginning to experience some serious medical problems, that you enter their lives as a case manager.

Lonnie and Dorothy live in the southern part of town in a low-income area. At one time, the neighborhood was nice. This was long before Lonnie and Dorothy arrived. They have two grown sons, John and Leroy, who occasionally come by to visit, and a grown daughter they never talk to. Lonnie, 62, works at a nursing home as a janitor. Dorothy, 60, does not work due to health problems, though she has worked as a personal nurse at some time in the past. They have been married for thirty-nine years but do not get along very well. They bicker constantly, and Dorothy has talked of times when Lonnie would lock her in the house due to jealousy while he was at work. Now, they basically coexist together without much substantial interaction.

Lonnie’s job is rough on him—he works seven-day shifts and then has three days off. He drives forty-five minutes to work in his 1985 pickup, on which he is still making payments. He spends all day on his feet and is exhausted when he gets home. For years, Lonnie was the head janitor at a truck stop and enjoyed the job. Unfortunately, he was laid off due to cutbacks and has been trying to find a job with better pay. He has found that his age has kept him from getting better work. He has been working at the nursing home since. He has talked of finding better work, but because he and Dorothy live from paycheck to paycheck, they cannot afford for him to take any kind of pay cut, even temporarily. Lonnie spends most of his spare time in front of the television.

This is hard on Dorothy. Due to heart problems, she is on disability and rarely gets away from the house, often spending days alone in the house. This causes her to be lonely and to have a limited view of the world—the “other side of town” is like another world to her. If she does get away, it is only to go to the grocery store or the pharmacy. She also has a tendency to be paranoid. For instance, if her disability check does not come on the exact day it did the previous month, she spends the afternoon on the phone talking to the disability office and the post office, positive someone has “made a mistake” or has “taken her check.” In some ways this is understandable, since Lonnie and Dorothy need the check to pay their bills. Dorothy’s check pays the rent and what little spending money she gets, while Lonnie’s covers the car payment, food, utilities, and medical bills. They spend every penny each month, leaving nothing for savings. Last month, Lonnie started to have medical problems himself and has had to go the doctor more frequently than usual.

  1. List the needs that Lonnie and Dorothy have. Then prioritize them.
  2. Identify the necessary case management roles and purposes for each of the three most important needs Lonnie and Dorothy have.
  3. The three methods of delivering case management you read about in Chapter 3 provide a structure for the case manager’s roles, responsibilities, and length of involvement with a client. Review the methods.

Which one would be most effective with Lonnie and Dorothy’s situation? Why?

[Solved] Value Job Security Accurately

[Solved] Value Job Security Accurately

In 1997, Professor Pauline Kim of the Washington University School of Law published “Bargaining with Imperfect Information:

A Study of Worker Perceptions of Legal Protection in an At-Will World” in the Cornell Law Review. In it, she reported the results of a survey of Missouri employees and their perceptions of protections the law provides them from losing their jobs under various circumstances. The survey revealed that the vast majority of employees were unaware of the at will rule and erroneously believed the law protected their employment from being terminated for a variety of reasons that are clearly legally permissible under the employment-at-will default rule. For example, nearly 89 percent of respondents believed that it is unlawful for an employer to fire an employee because of the employer’s personal dislike of the employee. Similarly, 87 percent of respondents believed an employer would be breaking the law if it fired an employee for erroneously concluding that the employee had stolen from the employer, even when the employee had provided proof that she had not.

Defenders of the employment-at-will rule justify it in a number of different ways. One of those is that employees who value greater job security can negotiate with employers for protection from unjustified termination of their employment (usually at the cost of a lower salary or other benefit concessions). Similarly, at least in theory, employers pay a wage premium for the

labor flexibility that the at-will rule provides. However if Professor Kim’s survey is broad representative of workers

knowledge about the at-will rule, then such employees are unlikely to value job security accurately and or to demand an appropriate wage premium. Employers presumably have no such misunderstanding. As a result. they benefit from theil

employees misapprehension of the at-will rule and some may encourage such misunderstanding in order to cultivate feelings of loyalty and security among their employees

What, if any, ethical obligation do employers, who are at an information advantage, owe to prospective employees toensure that they understand employment at will prior to negotiating the details of their employment?

Post One

I decided to write my discussion on the emergence of the Zika virus. What is Zika and how is it transmitted? Zika virus is an infection that is passed by mosquitoes.  Zika was first discovered inside monkeys in 1947 by scientists studying yellow fever in the Zika forest (WHO, 2016). The majority of people who are infected with zika may be asymptomatic. If you do develop symptoms, you may have a fever, rash, headaches, joint pains, redness in the eyes, and muscle pains.  The correct way to diagnose zika is by using PCR (polymerase chain reaction).

The timeline below provided by World Health Organization (2016) shows the countries that were infected by the Zika virus.

  • 1952 the first case of the      zika virus was discovered in Uganda in the republic of Tanzania.
  • 1969- 1983 Zika expanded      into countries such as Asia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pakistan.      Zika was discovered in mosquitoes.
  • 2007 spreads from Africa      and Asia and cause a large outbreak in the pacific island of Yap.
  • 2013- 2014 the outbreak      continues to spread to throughout the Pacific Island of French Polynesia,      Easter Island, the Cook Island, and New Caledonia 26,27. This outbreak      causes thousands of cases of the zika virus.
  • 2015 Brazil reported cases      to WHO of skin rashes, nearly 7,000 cases of illness. But zika was not      suspected at this stage.

In February of 2016, WHO declares the emergence of the Zika virus has been linked to cases of microcephaly and Guillain- Barre syndrome (GBS), and other neurological disorders. This increase was caused due to the mothers becoming infected by the zika virus. Although zika may not cause every cause of GBS and other brain abnormalities. It was enough to bring attention to public health to take the appropriate measures. One of the guidelines that should be taken if you are pregnant, you should not travel outside of the country. If you are to travel outside of the country it is best for you to have travel insurance.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) continues to monitor the zika virus in America and the Caribbean. In January 2022, there were 13 countries reported cases of the zika virus. The following countries are listed below with the number of cases and deaths.

· Bolivia: 173 cases

· Brazil: 29,117 cases (4 deaths)

· Colombia: 138 cases

· Costa Rica: 45 cases

· Guatemala: 1,685 cases

· Honduras: 37 cases

· Mexico: 12 cases

· Nicaragua: 4 cases

· Panama: 3 cases

· Paraguay: 785 cases

· Peru: 20 cases

· Puerto Rico: 20 cases

· Venezuela: 9 cases

With the emergence of the zika virus, we all should take the necessary precautions to protect ourselves and our love ones.

Vibrio Cholera

Cholera bacterial has been around for many centuries, the diarrheal disease came out to prominence in the 19th century, when a devastating outbreak occured in india. Cholera is a critical intestinal infection disease caused by a toxigenic bacterium called vibrio cholerae. Vibrio cholera is classified serologically; there are over hundreads of strains or serogroups of cholera bacteria, only 2 strains of bacteria knwon to cause outbreacks and epidemics ( vibrio cholerae 01 and vibrio cholerae 0139) according to World Health Organization ( WHO). Vibrio cholera is highly Motile, gram negative, curve-shapped rod and carries a unipolar flagellum, associates to the family of vibrionaceae. Normally the bacterium vibrio cholerae is found in food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria . The period of incubation can range from 12 hours to about 5 days for symptoms to appear after an individual ingests cholera bacteria. Symptoms begin suddenly with vomiting, comply by an abundant watery feces called secretory diarrhea ( Cowan, M. K.& Smith H. 2021, p668). The voided fluid commonly reffered to as rice water , stools often contains flecks of mucus. Other symptoms include musle cramp, thirst, restlessness or irritability. The symptoms of cholera vary according to the gravity of the disease. Most people infected with the disease experience mild to no symptoms at all, but the infection can be sometimes severe and life-treatening. If the disease left untreated, severe desydratation as a sign of complication can promptly lead to shock, coma and even death as a result of fluid and electrolytes loss. Most cases of cholera can be diagnosed based on clinical suspiscion in people with severe acute watery diarrhea, although, the only way to confirm a diagnosis of vibrio cholera is to identify the presence of bacteria 01 oe 0139 in a stool sample. Since cholera is most commonly transmitted throuh ingestion of contaminated food and water, a good and safe hygiene include whashing hands often, drinking clean water, eating well cooked food can help prevent the spread of the disease. Rehydratation oral or intraveinous is the main treatment for cholera following with antibiotic for severely ill patients according to Centers for disease control (CDC).
