The Corps de Ballet – Swan Lake

As we have learned through our study of Chapter 10, ballet has been with us as a formal dance form for hundreds of years. Beginning as interludes between acts of the opera, ballet was codified into its own art form and found its home at the Paris Opera house. From there, thousands upon thousands of dancers have studied, practiced and performed both classical and modern ballet repertoire to the delight of myriads of audiences throughout the world.

Below you will find ABT’s 2015 video about their Production of Swan Lake (the ballet featured in our text). Watch the video and pay close attention to the interviews with the dancers and the clips of rehearsals and performances of the ballet.

1). After viewing the video, make observations about how the choreographer designed the corps de ballet to function within the overall ballet. They are not the principal dancers. Why is the corps de ballet considered to be the “backbone” of the ballet company?

2) From the interviews with the dancers, list three specific responsibilities a dancer could have as part of a dance company.

3) What Technical points of dance did the dancers identify that they need to be aware of as they rehearse and perform?

Managers need to make informed decisions. Using data, or research, to analyze your business is an important part of making decisions and evaluating business performance. An IT manager analyzes service levels, a marketing manager tries to predict the results of planned campaigns, and virtually any business manager needs data to identify relationships between relevant variables. Your skill in business research to analyze data and drive decision-making helps you to add confidence despite uncertainty, draw conclusions about organizational performance, and add value to your organization. 

Scenario

As the manager of a customer service call center, you are evaluating the quality of the call center’s operations. One of the most important metrics in a call center is time in queue (TiQ), the time a customer waits before a customer service representative (CSR) comes on the line to help. To provide the best customer experience, you want your customers’ wait to be less than the 2.5-minute (150 seconds) industry standard. You know that when they wait for too long, customers are more likely to have a negative experience or hang up before being helped.

Another metric you measure in the call center is the handling time, or service time (ST), the amount of time a CSR spends servicing the customer. Last month’s average ST was approximately 3.5 minutes (210 seconds). Your industry experience tells you that the average ST can be influenced by a CSR’s level of training, amount of experience, and whether the CSR can provide a resolution to the issue quickly. Recently, you tested a strategy to have callers identify the type of issue they are calling about and then route calls to CSRs with expertise in that issue. 

The new protocol (PE) is being tested side-by-side with the current protocol (PT) to see if ST is improved with this strategy. The regional director was hesitant to test the PE protocol for two weeks, already concerned about the customer experience, but agreed to the test. After the first few days, the regional director is anxious to know the results and asks you to send a report. You ask the user experience (UX) team to pull a report for the TiQ and ST for both protocols to analyze. 

Preparation

Review the call time analysis provided by the UX team. You may also review the call time data in Excel if desired.  

Assessment Deliverable

Write a 350- to 700-word email, or memo, about the PE and PT test results after the first few days. Address the following in your email:

 Your memo should have two sections. In the first section, you should clearly identify the results of the time in queue test and your recommendation for the company. What should the company do as a result of your findings? And in the second section, the average service time test, you should clearly state your finding in a sense did the new protocol work and what you recommend for the company. Both test results are shown in the “call time analysis report.” The link is provided above. John: His primary physician referred John to a clinical psychologist after several episodes of sudden violence and rage. John claimed to have limited or no memory of the incidents. His mother described him as typically being a shy, quiet, and even withdrawn adolescent. This was the 15-year-old’s first psychological evaluation. During one of John’s episodes, his anger was so out of control that he broke dishes, punched holes in the wall, and did hundreds of dollars of damage to his room. His mother worried that John’s anger might soon turn to violence against himself or others. She further described him as having low energy, sometimes being sullen, and wanting to sleep a lot. He was unhappy in school, falling far behind his classmates, and in danger of repeating the ninth grade.

Nick is a 10-year-old boy whose pediatrician has referred him for a psychological evaluation because of concerns about his behavior at school and at home. Although his teacher thinks he is smart and capable of more than he is currently demonstrating, she has suggested that he be evaluated for ADHD. Nick’s academic performance has declined, and the teacher complains that he is impulsive and has difficulties focusing. His parents report that “homework is a nightmare” because Nick cannot sit still and becomes very frustrated when he does not know how to solve problems. Nightly battles over homework have become the norm. Lately, Nick has been referring to himself as “stupid,” and he shows poor motivation when it comes to schoolwork. 

When reviewing the case studies, what would you consider for a diagnosis for each? Why? What other questions might you want to ask to learn more? What would be the advantages and disadvantages of making a diagnosis at all?
