Welcome to week 5! Please read the Week 5 guidance and let me know if you have questions about the content or the assignments. In addition to Chapters 5 and 6 in the Creswell and Creswell (2018) textbook, two videos about making effective presentations are listed in the recommended course materials. You may want to search online for instructions on using specific tools for presentations, such as PowerPoint, Prezi, Zoom, Screencast-o-matic, Jing, or others. Use your creativity to make an attractive and coherent presentation of your research idea, following the instructions in the discussion prompt for the required content. 

We have one discussion, a comprehensive final exam, and an assignment this week. The Week 5 discussion is a preliminary presentation. The purpose of this draft presentation is to allow you to share your preliminary plans for your research design and get feedback from your classmates and instructor. Think about how you would present your research idea to an Institutional Review Board (IRB) to get permission to carry out a new study. This type of presentation may also be given to a funding agency if you are applying for a grant to pay for the research. To make your presentation accessible, provide a transcript of the audio portion in your discussion post. 

Preliminary Research Design Presentation and Feedback [WLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Prior to beginning work on this discussion presentation, read Chapters 5 and 6 in the Creswell and Creswell textbook. You may also watch the videos about public speaking and making presentations in the Recommended Resources section. The Writing Center also has two helpful resources, How to Make a PowerPoint Presentation Links to an external site.and Presentation Tips Links to an external site.. These resources will assist you in the creation of an effective presentation of your research design.

This discussion will provide you with an opportunity to create a dynamic presentation of your ideas for your final research proposal. This type of presentation would be used in the professional world to request institutional review board (IRB) approval, and potentially to elicit funding for your research.

In your presentation, summarize the main points and ideas for your research design. Over the course of the week, you will have the opportunity to share feedback and suggestions with your classmates and instructor, as well as receiving constructive feedback which may assist you in improving your research proposal before submitting the Research Design Presentation assignment this week and the Final Paper next week.

For this discussion, create a 7-minute audiovisual presentation using PowerPoint, Prezi, Zoom, Jing, Screencast-o-matic or any other presentation software or format with which you feel comfortable. Provide either closed captioning or a transcript of the presentation for accessibility.

The content of the presentation must include the following:

• A brief introduction
  • Devise a specific research question related to the topic you chose in Week 1.
  • Explain the importance of the topic and research question.
• A brief literature review
  • Evaluate published research studies on your topic that you found during your work on the Annotated Bibliography assignment last week and identify two relevant published studies.
• A description of potential methods
  • Create an appropriate research approach and design to investigate your research question based on what you have learned about research design options and requirements in this course.
  • Provide a rationale for your design choices.
• A discussion on ethical issues
  • Apply ethical standards to the proposed research and identify potential ethical issues that would apply. Explain how you plan to address these issues.
• A conclusion
  • Summarize the main points of the presentation and reiterate why the proposed research is important and why it should be carried out.

In your initial discussion post, introduce your presentation and provide either an attached presentation file or a link to the place where your recorded presentation is stored online. To ensure that colleagues can access the information in your presentation even if they are unable to view the presentation due to technical difficulties, attach your transcript and any supplemental material (such as your reference list) to your initial post.

Note: This assignment requires that you produce a visual presentation, supply a spoken audio narrative, and listen to the audio narrative of others. You are also asked to provide a transcript of your presentation. H03 Medical Terminology

Directions:  Be sure to save an electronic copy of your answer before submitting it to Ashworth College for grading. Unless otherwise stated, answer in complete sentences, and be sure to use correct English, spelling and grammar. Sources must be cited in APA format. Your response should be four (4) double-spaced pages; refer to the “Assignment Format” page located on the Course Home page for specific format requirements.

In Lessons 1 through 4, you learned foundational information on medical terminology and the organization of the body.  In addition, medical language associated with the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, digestive, cardiovascular, blood and lymphatic, respiratory, and nervous systems was discussed.  For this written assignment, the concepts learned from Lessons 1-4 will be applied.  Please review the learning objectives for Lessons 1-4 prior to beginning work on this assignment.  

In a four-page summary, address the following questions.

Part A:    Discuss word root, prefix, suffix, and combining form in relation to determining the meaning of medical terms.  

Part B:    Explain how the phonetically spelled pronunciation guide aids you to pronounce medical words or phrases correctly. Give at least 3 examples of medical words that would have a different meaning if pronounced incorrectly. What effect could mispronouncing these 3 words have on patients?

Part C:    Choose one of the major systems you learned about in Lessons 1 through 4. In your own words, describe the major organs within that system, how they work together to perform the major functions of the system, and at least 2 illnesses related to the system.

Choose a “popular” diet to research and review. You can include The South Beach Diet, Atkins Diet, etc. Thoroughly research this diet, using reputable sources including some that are not published by the creators of the diet you have chosen. Once you have researched the diet, answer the following:

• Describe the diet itself. For instance, what foods are included, are any foods prohibited, what is the macronutrient distribution, etc.
• What claims does the diet make? Are they sound? Why or why not? Use what you have learned in class up until this point to analyze the claims.
• Would you consider this a healthy diet overall? Why or why not? Consider possible drug interactions with components of the diet that are emphasized.
• Would this diet be appropriate for any certain populations (e g., athletes, elderly, etc.)? Would this diet be appropriate for all populations? Consider variables such as cost, cultural influences, and sustainability. Why or why not?

When searching the topic of diets on the internet, you will come across more false information than accurate information, so be sure and assess your sources’ reputability prior to using them to support your post.
