This data project will be composed of two parts.

In Part I of your report, you will compile class data from the Week 1 Eco Moment on our Ecological Footprints (found in the “Shared Data” Discussion under Ecological Footprint Data) and summarize/analyze it with Excel (or similar spreadsheet program). Discuss what trend(s) you see in the class data that relate to course concepts. Think about the best way to present your findings–tabular or graphical form? There is no right answer here, as long as you pick a format that highlights your main findings and supports your table(s) and/or graph(s) with clear text that interprets the results. Do any of the findings surprise you? Why or why not?

In Part II, you will research and discuss possible solutions to the environmental problems reflected in the class data. Here, you will want to support your argument with reliable, scientific resources (e.g., peer-reviewed scientific papers, white papers, and government websites). Be sure to end with a strong concluding paragraph that summarizes the main data trend(s), along with the merits and relevance of your chosen solution(s).

Format

The page limit for your written report for both Part I and Part II are two pages, plus one page for the data table/graph(s) you use to present your findings in Part I. The page limit does not include an optional title page, the reference list, and the appendix with the raw class data. The report should be double-spaced with one-inch margins all around and use a 12-pt font.

Here is the order in which to present the various project components:

1. Part I = describe the class data we collected, include the methodology, relevant web tool (if applicable), the mean and sample size for each result, table/graph(s) that depict the main findings and/or trends; interpret the table/graph(s) for the reader
2. Part II = summarize research on possible solutions; be sure to incorporate reliable in-text citations and focus on relevant, attainable solutions

Go on-line and find a current event that involves a criminal investigation or a law enforcement agency. Then copy the link (to submit) and write a one page paper with what the event is about and your personal opinion. (50 points)

Overview

Now that we have seen how we can focus on specific stimuli in our environment, we can reap the benefits of paying attention. The next stage along our journey into the mind is short-term memory. More accurately, we should probably designate it as working memory. The difference between the two terms is important: short-term means that it is limited in terms of time. Working tells us that there is a top-down process involved and a capacity to mentally work on the information that is maintained in consciousness. As always, cognition is not as simple as it seems!

The following labs will help you understand the type of information that we can manipulate, how much information we can process, and how it can be interfered with. As you complete these labs, ask yourself if the limits of our short-term/working memory are what we think they are. Can we easily think of two things at the same time? Can we easily manipulate information in our mind’s eye?

You’ve just been promoted to Head of Research and Planning in the large municipal police department in which you work. Your goal is to determine ways that the department can be more proactive and better prepared for the future—move away from its reactionary mode of conduct. Your community is diverse, and is growing more diverse by the day. In particular, you are tasked with addressing that diversity in terms of a) training of police officers, b) enforcement of the law, c) properly staffing a department serving this community, and d) adopting or creating effective policies governing the department. Draft a memo (or essay), being very deliberate in your game plan for addressing these considerations-think about applications that would actually be effective, ones that you can argue could truly be put into action. Be concrete-identify any relevant strategies or theories or policies covered by the text and/or lectures. (Be certain to review Chapters 14 and 15 of the textbook, the most recent reading assignment, for some current findings and thinking worth considering.)

Note: In your paper, identify, by the use of bold font, key criminal justice terminology that is emphasized in the textbook. (Generally, this will be words or phrases that apply uniquely to multiculturalism in the context of the criminal justice system.)

The Scenario – You have been chosen by your CEO to prepare a brief or letter for your company to explain the changes that the organization will be experiencing. The CEO chose you because you are known to have your finger on the pulse of the workers and embrace technology. He wants you to reassure the workforce of the coming changes.  

The CEO told you that he has heard numerous rumors of low morale, employees looking for new jobs, possible strikes (your workers are union) and even threatening comments. Your company is ELO Transportation, a small local company that takes normal gasoline engine vehicles and transforms them into electric-powered vehicles. Your company so far has transformed a few buses, garbage trucks, tow trucks, and numerous other vehicles for your community (a town of 100,000 people) however, with automation, machine learning, and AI the company is looking to launch nationwide. This will happen in the next two years.  

A large percentage of your workforce are older workers and are really concerned about learning new technology and losing their job to “dumb machines”!

You can “make up” facts to help your brief, just make sure your work is pertinent to the course material.
