In medical settings such as a hospital, a Social Worker is often involved as part of the interdisciplinary team. A Social Worker may be asked to be present to provide support to the patient or family in discussing diagnoses, prognosis, or end-of-life issues. A Social Worker may also be needed to support the family when the death of the patient is imminent and after the loss of their loved one.

For your final paper, I would like you to write a concise, precise, and well-organized argumentative essay on one of the topics we have covered in this class thus far. It should be 1000-1200 words. Philosophy teaches and requires effective communication on challenging issues, so skills gained in writing and communicating about philosophy transfer to any other area of life.

You should:

(a) pick one of the topics we’ve covered in the class so far–an “applied” or “practical” topic is likely better, although you may also discuss a moral theory and an argument

about that theory also–and

(b) present and explain an argument on the topic: that is, you present a conclusion on the topic (e.g., “Doing X is wrong” or “Doing X is not wrong or some more specific conclusion) and you give reasons to support that conclusion. You may present just one argument, but you may also present a number of arguments: what’s important is that however many arguments you present, you present them in adequate detail and that you fully explain the arguments.

Your task is to do this all in a way that any reader or audience could understand and learn from.

This is not a “research paper”: you should not seek any resources beyond the class. The goal is to explain an issue and give arguments on that issue: the focus is on presenting reasoning, not presenting “information” that you might find from research.

What’s key is organization, so you will want clear, labeled sections like these:

1. Introduction

You need a brief introduction that says what your paper will be about and gives your thesis, or the main point you will argue.

2. The Issue

Here you will want to give whatever background information and explanation readers need to know about the topic of your paper.

3. The Argument

Here you want to very explicitly make your argument: clearly state your conclusion and clearly give the reasons you are giving in support of that conclusion. Explain why you think these reasons support that conclusion and why you think people should accept those reasons.

4. Objections and Questions

You must raise and respond to at least one objection–that is a reason might be given to think that vour argument is unsound–or respond to a critical question someone.

5. Conclusion

You need a conclusion that reviews what you have done and, perhaps, is suggestive of what else needs to be discussed or how your discussion might be applied to other things.

Thoughts on final paper: 

 Don’t feel you have to stick to questions exactly as they are worded. They are designed to get you thinking about your life in relationship to what we covered in the course. 

Personal Life Plan

Respond to at least four (including # 9) of the following topics. The Plan should be in essay format,  typed, double spaced, and two and a half to three pages (approximately 750 words). Be sure to identify at least five theories/theorists as appropriate.

7. What it is that gives meaning and a sense of purpose to your life, both now and as you imagine how you would like to shape your life moving forward–drawing on systems of meaning and/or narrative growth themes (agency/communion and extrinsic/intrinsic).
8. Personal insights on work values, career interest patterns, roles, occupational environment, corporate culture, and workplace meaning.
9. Goals that you have set for yourself and barriers that must be overcome to achieve your goals.

Expository Essay Draft

Write a 750-1000 word essay about a topic of your choice in the style described within Unit VI and VII.

Purpose: Throughout Units VI and VII, we have discussed the conventions of the expository essay. The purpose of this assignment is to measure your mastery of those conventions by putting your knowledge to practice. As we discussed in Unit VI, Lesson 1, the expository essay is a general term for an essay that expounds upon or explains a topic. The objective of the essay is to convey information to the reader; most importantly, an expository essay is an exploration of a topic, and the tone is explanatory. After choosing your topic, you will need to choose the form that is most appropriate to fit the topic: cause and effect, problem and solution, or sequential. A thesis statement, which contains the paper’s argument, will be appropriate to the form you choose.

Process: For the expository essay, you will complete the following steps:

Choose a topic: See Unit VI, Lesson 2, for more information about choosing a topic.

Create a plan of action: See Unit VI, Lesson 3, for strategies for assessing what you already know and assessing what you need to know.

Research the topic: See Unit VI, Lesson 4, for instruction on research methods.

Choose the organization of your essay: Choose between cause and effect, problem and solution, or sequential organization types. See Unit VI, Lesson 1, for a list of the three organizational forms, and see Unit VII, Lesson 1, for a description of thesis statements written according to the organizational form of the essay.

Create a thesis statement: See Unit VII, Lesson 1, for a description of thesis statements written according to the organizational form of the essay.

Draft the essay: See Unit VII, Lesson 1, for keeping brainstorming in mind and Unit VII, Lesson 2, for more on the drafting process and description of each essay section.

Stylistic details: All essays must meet the following requirements:

Write in Times New Roman, 12-point font.

Include one-inch margins on all sides.

Use double spacing (top-to-bottom every page, to include above and below titles and centered words).

Include an APA title page (for all essays) and reference list that includes all of the sources used in the essay.
