One Message, Many Media: Integrated Marketing Campaigns

To examine integrated marketing in action, in this activity, you’re going to tell the story of a particular campaign from your internship brand, selected in Week 1, across multiple media. We want to know what unifies the campaign and how each unique medium is being utilized (or underutilized if you feel so). And we want to hear if you think the campaign is effective or not and why. So, let’s start!

  • Identify a significant marketing campaign from your internship brand.
    • Find one campaign that was supported across multiple media (e.g., TV, print, website, banner ads, social media networks ads, billboard ads, etc.).
    • If you don’t know how to identify and research major marketing campaigns, search the web or major advertising publications (Try Adweek

Links to an external site. or the Adweek YouTube Channel Links to an external site..) for articles about your brand’s advertising campaigns or check your brand’s Twitter feed for recurring ad messages. You can also search MOAT

    • Links to an external site. to find various versions of your brands’ creatives.
    • Find campaign executions for at least three different media channels (e.g., campaign executions on TV, print, website, banner ads, social media networks ads, billboard ads, etc.). Include the images of each media channel in your post. If you are using a TV commercial or a YouTube ad or any video-based channel, and decide not to link the entire video, you need to at least include a screenshot or still image of the most important shot of that video ad.
  • Create a new post containing the following elements:
    • Define integrated marking communications (IMC) in your words. Use the text to support your definition.
  • Describe why companies use IMC campaigns.
  • For each medium channel you picked, briefly describe how it is being used, focusing on what it can do that other media cannot. (Three media channels should be in your post along with a copy of the ad image or video.
  • A paragraph summarizing what unifies the campaign and whether you think it is effective and why.
  • Use Table 6.2 POE’s model of message channels from the course text, and from each quadrant, identify at least one channel that would benefit your internship brand if adopted or used more effectively. Explain your reason.
  • Your initial post must be at least 350 words.
  • Be sure to use subject headers for each of the questions asked.
  • Review the Level Heading section of Introduction to APA
  • Links to an external site. resource from the Writing Center for more information.
  • Be sure to properly cite your textbook in APA Style as outlined in the Writing Center’s APA: Citing Within Your Paper

Guided Response:

  • Respond to at least three of your fellow marketers by Day 7 (Monday).
    • Provide feedback on your peers’ assessments.
    • Do you agree with their assessments of the campaign’s effectiveness?
    • What previously unmentioned factors contribute to your assessment?
  • You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful discussion and collaboration between you and your fellow marketers.
  • Continue to monitor the discussion forum through Day 7 (Monday), and respond to anyone who replies to your initial post.

Skills Learned This activity helps you practice the following industry-required skills:

  • Digital/Social Media Marketing
  • Analytical Skills

Helpful Tip:

  • Do I have to use my internship brand for this assignment?
    • Please do, as this will enhance your understanding of the brand’s marketing practices and the brand and will be helpful in developing your final paper: The Marketing Plan.

Pizza Pricing Strategies

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Tip: This week, you will have two main discussion forum posts. Your discussion forum posts are due on 2 different days. You need to work harder to submit well-examined and thoroughly analyzed initial posts, one of which is due on Thursday of the week, and the other is due on Saturday of the week. Please dedicate enough time to each forum question and make sure you use your “critical thinking” and your “analytical/problem-solving” mind. Understanding these concepts will be vital in order to complete your final project in Week 5.

Pizza Pricing Strategies

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum,

Read

  • Chapter 5 of the course text, Principles of Marketing

Instructions:

This week, you learned about the three core pricing strategies: penetration, neutral, and skim. In this activity you are going to briefly recap the three pricing strategies, use them to classify the major pizza chains based on exploring the online ordering process, and then answer a few related questions. So, let’s dig in!

  • Refamiliarize yourself with the three main pricing strategies.
    • Review Section 5.2 in the text as needed.
  • Research actual pizza pricing for five different pizza chains of your choice.
    • Visit each site, identify your location, and simulate an order.
    • Price out a medium cheese or pepperoni pizza.
    • Proceed to payment, observing the selling process.
    • Record the final price (minus tax).
    • Execute your purchase as you see fit. (Note that you do not need to actually purchase the pizza.)
  • Create a forum post that includes the following:
    • A brief description of the three pricing strategies, from least to most expensive strategy.
    • Classifications of the five brands into the three pricing strategies: penetration, neutral, and skim.
    • For any of the three pricing strategies where you have multiple brands, rank the brands from least to most expensive.
    • Include the kind of pizza you priced, your recorded prices, and any other pertinent notes you observed in ordering process.
    • Your classifications may differ from others. That’s okay.
  • Answer the following questions:
    • Did your perception of these chains’ pricing strategies change based on this exercise? If so, how?
    • For you, which of these chains represents the greatest value and why?
    • Explain how each of the four Ps of the marketing mix contributes to your answer.
    • If you were to suggest two sales promotion strategies (Section 5.4) to attract more sales, for the brand that has the greatest value for you, which two would you suggest?
    • Name the promotional pricing strategy and explain why this is the best fit for the brand you picked.
  • Your initial post must be at least 350 words.
  • Be sure to use subject headers for each of the questions asked.
    • Review the Level Heading section of Introduction to APA resource from the Writing Center for more information.
  • Be sure to properly cite your textbook as outlined in the Writing Center’s APA: Citing Within Your Paper guide.

Guided Response:

  • Respond to at least three of your fellow marketers by Day 7 (Monday).
    • Price-value perceptions vary by individual.
    • Respond to three of your peers, including one who selected a different chain as offering the best value. Customize your “pitch” to try to change their mind.

  • Negotiation
  • Leadership/Independence

Helpful Tips:

  • There is no (insert pizza chain here) near me. What do I do?
    • Just work with the nearest location from your zip code search.
  • Will University of Arizona Global Campus subsidize my pizza purchases?
    • Sadly, no. You’re on your own if you decide to order.
  • I’m lactose intolerant. Is there an alternate assignment?
    • Very funny. To be clear, you only have to shop for pizza, not eat it.

Marketing Plan: Product Identification and SWOT Analysis

Prior to beginning work on this assignment,

Read

  • Chapter 9: Managing the Marketing Effect, Sections 9.1 and 9.2, from the course text, Principles of Marketing

Watch

Instructions:

This week, you will be creating components of your capstone marketing plan assignment. You will then finish your plan in Week 5.

Using the company you selected for your marketing manager internship, you will complete a situation analysis with the goal of identifying a new product or service to develop your marketing plan against.

Create a Word document of three to four pages formatted in APA Style that includes at least one scholarly, peer-reviewed, or other credible resource from the University of Arizona Global Campus library in addition to the course text.

In your paper,

  • Describe the selected company and brand and a brief history.
  • List the core products and services they offer.
  • Identify the key current competitors.
  • Complete a SWOT analysis
  • Propose the product or service line you want to develop a marketing plan for.
    • Justify your proposal with a SWOT-based argument for why it warrants marketing investment.
    • Describe your core product, extended product, and the product concept.
  • Explain how you plan to achieve competitive differentiation through creating customer value in the four areas listed below. Also, refer to The Five Competitive Forces That Shape Strategy video:
    • Branding
    • Packaging
    • Support
    • Quality
  • Be sure to use subject headers for each of the questions asked. Your paper needs to contain at least eight headers (i.e., introduction header, at least six headers for the six parts of the question, conclusion header)
    • Review the Level Heading section of Introduction to APA resource from the Writing Center for more information.

Helpful Tips:

Your marketing plan can focus on a new product or service idea of your own or an existing product or service that you think deserves its own dedicated campaign. Just don’t pick something that you’ve already seen being actively marketed.

For example, after completing a SWOT analysis for McDonald’s, one might propose marketing new concepts like a McVeggie burger or an adult Happy Meal. Further afield, one might propose a whole new chain of pay-to-visit indoor McPlayground Centers. Or relative to existing menu offerings, one might suggest a dedicated marketing campaign for say “burgers at breakfast” or after-midnight snacking via the drive-through.

Learn about your brand and then let your imagination run wild. It can be a big idea that will appeal to many of their customers or a very targeted effort—you decide. You can always adjust your idea after getting instructor feedback.

To learn more about SWOT analysis and see as an example how it is applied to Starbucks, you may see the below resources:

Market Research Process Failure Scenario [WLOs: 1, 2] [CLO: 1, 2, 5, 6]

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum,

Read

  • Chapter 2 of the course text, Principles of Marketing

The Scenario

Every year, millions of dollars are spent marketing products (or services) that fail. Companies would love to get all that money back.

Fortunately, you happen to have a functioning time machine that you bought on Craigslist. As a result, you have one chance to fix what went wrong in the marketing research process and convince one of those companies not to spend that money.

We learned that there are five main steps for the marketing process. In Step 2 before marketers decide on the value proposition and the USP and positioning, they need to conduct in-depth market research to gain an understanding of their target market and the consumer behavior (i.e., their needs and wants). The market research process has five main steps that, if not followed correctly, will result in the failure of the marketing plan and, at the higher level, the product or service. You are tasked to analyze one of these failures.

Instructions:

  • Investigate and document the story of a famous new product flop (and market research failure).
  • Explain how you went back in time to fix it.
  • In your initial post include the following:
    • Identify and research a prominent product or service failure.
    • The press loves failures, so you won’t have any problems finding examples. Simply Google it but before writing, read extensively about it and make sure the product failure is related to improper marketing research implementation.
    • List the following: product or service name, the company who marketed it, the year it was introduced, and where it was introduced (particularly if not in the United States).
  • Answer the following questions about the market research process:
    • Refer to Section 2.3 Conducting Market Research and Figure 2.5 in the text and the video you watched.
    • What are the steps in a market research process? Provide each step and relate it to your product.
    • Where was the failure in your product’s market research process? Which step was missing, not followed correctly, misinterpreted, or misrepresented?
    • What solution are you going to share with management to correct the gap in the market research process, if you could you go back in time?
  • Be sure to use subject headers for each of the questions asked.
  • Be sure to properly cite your textbook and the source you used for the product flop in APA Style as outlined in the Writing Center’s APA: Citing Within Your Paper

Guided Response:

  • Respond to at least three of your fellow marketers by Day 7 (Monday).
    • Explain how this classmate’s market research failure was similar or different than yours.
    • Try to respond to those who do not yet have three replies.
  • You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful and interactive discourse in this discussion forum.
