 What is a Learning Story?

A ‘Learning Story’ is a record of what a teacher (or parent) has seen a child (or group of children) doing .It is usually focused on a specific incident or episode. It may focus on a group activity, and be a learning story about an activity that the children did together such as visiting a fire station or going on a walk.

Description:  Writing competency statements enables Early Childhood professionals to illustrate understanding of fundamental skills necessary to create high quality care and education for infants and toddlers.

Directions:  For the Florida Child Care Professional Credential (FCCPC) write a competency statement for:

Competency Goal 4: Development of educational programs that improve motor, language, and cognitive development of children, including literacy development.

Write a 500-word statement that addresses how you meet this goal for young infants, mobile infants, and toddlers. Make sure that you address each area for each age group:  motor, language, cognitive and literacy development.

First, introduce the importance of educational programs that improve motor, language, and cognitive development of children, including literacy development. 

Second, describe objectives to create this type of program.

Third, describe activities you implement to improve motor, language, and cognitive development of children, including literacy development.

Suppose you are ending your career in teaching and you are planning to retire. Your friends have decided to give you a retirement celebration and they have asked several of your former students to speak at the event. What those students say will be a reflection of your life’s work and will define your legacy.

Prior to writing your journal entry, read Chapter 11: Standards, Curriculum, and Accountability in your Introduction to Teaching: Making a Difference in Student Learning textbook.

Given what has been discussed throughout this course, and what you know about yourself and your dedication to teaching and learning, in one or two pages summarize what you predict your students will say at your retirement party? What will your legacy be?

This week your task is to research and evaluate the four main evidenced-based instructional models used in today’s classrooms.

Prior to participating in this discussion forum, review the information about the four main instructional models and invite your classmates to engage in a conversation with you by posing at least one question around those four models.

Craft a thought-provoking question around the four models that might inquire about things like steps and components of the model, how to implement the model, why one might be preferred over another, effectiveness of one model over another, or any other intriguing question topics you may have. The idea is for you to further the critical thinking processes of your classmates by challenging them to broaden their awareness of the four main evidenced-based instructional models used in today’s classrooms.

The Direct Instruction Model – A model of instruction that usually consists of two main components, expository teaching (lecture) and questioning.

Cooperative Learning Model – A learning model that involves the use of small groups in the classroom so that students work together to extend their own and each other’s learning.

PBL Model – A teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended time on a real-world challenge to produce a product.

Inquiry-Based Model – A teaching model that provides learners with opportunities to develop skills that enable them to locate, gather, and apply information in a wide range of contexts.

Every good educator tries to provide support for learners in as many modalities as possible. The following video clips also introduce our four instructional models upon which we focus this week.

1. Start with an introduction.
2. Complete the body of the transcript by using examples from the interaction between the team members in this scenario, and respond to the questions that follow in a 2- to 3-minute audio-based response. *Make sure to integrate one source (or more) from the readings and your own personal experiences.
   • Evaluate three issues faced in the panel discussion presented in the scenario. Discuss effective and ineffective characteristics of team behaviors in the observed scenario. How effectively did this team work together?
   • What three suggestions do you have for the team to engage in professionalism?
   • In the observed situation, who do you feel should take leadership? Why? What are the benefits of having leadership on a team? What are the concerns of having leadership on a team? In this situation, what would you do to lead the team?
   • What three strategies do you have for productivity when working in teams?
3. End with a conclusion
4. Properly cite/reference one of the class readings in the transcript and orally during the audio recording.
5. Create an audio recording of your transcript. The recording should be 2–3 minutes in length. There should not be background noise, and the recording should be done in one sitting and submitted as one file.
