Art in Everyday Life

Marking art and appreciating it is about sharpening our skills in seeing art. It is in abundance around us. Consider these examples:

  • A mural or graffiti on the side of a building.
  • A sculpture or a fountain.
  • Patchwork quilts hanging on a clothesline.
  • A photograph we can’t stop looking at.
  • A meal that appeals to our palettes, our eyes, and our sense of smell.
  • A house we’ve driven by and always wanted to live in.
  • A garden that makes us stop driving, get out of our car, and take in the smells and the view.
  • An artifact (a smooth stone, an ornament, a box, a book) that we keep close because of its personal meaning for us.

[Solved] Local Newspaper May Provide

[Solved] Local Newspaper May Provide

  1. Your elected officials.

An important aspect of civic engagement is knowing who is your voice in policy making, both in Congress and in your state capitol.  This assignment is to help you become familiar with those individuals, particularly important if the results of the election changed who represents you.

Write a brief report to include the information listed below about your federal and state representatives.  Divide it clearly so you cover your Representative and Senators in U.S. Congress, and then your state elected officials

Report the following information about your legislators:

  • Name, political party and number of terms served
  • Were they recently elected/re-elected?   If so, who were their opponents and how might the election results impact their governing?
  • Their age, gender, profession, and other characteristics you find notable
  • Voting record on health-related bills
  • Committee sub/committee membership
  • Women and infant health issues important to him/her
  • News-worthy quotes, blunders, or brilliant moves. You might provide a hyperlink to a particularly compelling news story that captures this person well.

There are many ways to get this information.  They include:

If you’re comfortable, feel free to share your personal feelings about your legislators.  Do you feel comfortable having them represent you?  Do you believe they have your best interests at heart?

Please do NOT cut/paste sections from your elected official’s web site.  A particularly pithy or telling statement or two is fine (if properly cited), but otherwise please summarize in your own words – not their spin!

Note:  You are not reporting on all your elected officials (the Governor, Secretary of State, Treasurer, etc.).  Those are important positions and I urge you to learn about everyone who is on your state ballot, but for this assignment, you are reporting only on those state officials that represent your district.

 People to report on includes:

 New Jersey 3rd Congressional District – Andy Kim

 New Jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Democrats Cory Booker and Bob Menendez.

 7th Legislative District represented by state Senator Sen. Troy Singleton,

Assembly members Assemblyman Herb Conaway and Assembly woman Carol A. Murphy

[Solved] Biggest “ Takeaway ”

For your Self-Assessment , organize your thoughts into a unified and coherent composition that describes your work on the project, reflects upon your learning, and assesses your contributions to the group and your classmates’ contributions to the group. Consider the following questions:

§ What were your expectations for this project when it was first mentioned in class? after you were given the instructions? as your group began working together? How were those expectations met or disappointed or exceeded?

§ What did you learn about your group’s poet? Quote at least one passage from one of the sources that you found to be especially interesting or informative. What did you learn about the overall topic of the lives and works of living American poets through this project? Feel free to refer to the other groups’ projects. How has this project changed the way you think about poetry?

§ What work did you do in and outside of class for this project? How well did your group fulfill the requirements of the project? What parts of the presentation could have been better?

§ How well did your group work together? Did the other members of your group “pull their weight” evenly on the tasks? Did you? Be honest.

§ What was (or were) your primary role(s) in your group (leader, supporter, idea generator, taskmaster, peacekeeper, pragmatist, communicator, consensus builder, energizer, something else)? How has this project helped you understand your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to teamwork?

§ Has this project pushed you outside of your comfort zone? How so? What was it like presenting in front of a larger audience? What skills, knowledge, or habits of mind did this project reveal to you that you need to acquire or practice?

[Solved] Night Air Pressure

[Solved] Night Air Pressure

Log weather factors for 10 days starting in the week of Unit 6 from the Weather Channel web site. The completed PP charts with definitions, observations, conclusions and comments should be submitted as directed.

Choose a city in a different part of the world for comparison with your home city.

The purpose of the experiment is for the students to:

1. compare the weather patterns of their home city in IL to a city in another part of the world and

2. make conclusions about the similarities or differences they observe.

Use the 10-day forecast of the weather factors in the city chosen and your home city on the Weather Channel website. The weather factors to be logged are: temperature (high and low or average temp of day and night), air pressure, precipitation, humidity and/or relative humidity, clouds, sunrise and sunset times, winds, uv index and any other relevant information that affects the weather pattern of the citieschosen. Make charts/ graphs on each of the weather factorsusing the Excel program.  The graphs should have titles, labels with proper units of measurement for the variables. Color code the two graphs of the same weather factor of the two cities for comparison on the same sheet.

Include the definitions of the weather factors and their related variables (ex. wind-chill factor, heat index etc.), the units, and the instruments used to measure them in the PowerPoint.  The pattern of weather change observed and its rationale should be clearly explained in the conclusion. In the PowerPoint slides, comparison of the weather pattern of the two cities should be clearly explained. Use information from class notes, textbook readings and web search for correct information about the cities, their climate regions and their weather patterns. Watch for sudden changes in weather during the 10 days you are observing and explain that also in your conclusion comparing it with the forecast that you logged. This must be treated as an inquiry lab. Connect the observations to the big picture such as climate conditions and seasons. The Weather log assignment must be submitted on Elearn with all the required items as a PowerPoint Presentation in Unit 8.

In case this lab is done as a Learning Team Project (your professor will let you know at the start of the class if you will be working in teams, which will be a possibility only if the class size is large), you must provide

A statement describing the work contract among the team members and each member’s contribution to the project, signed by each group member.

Please use Excel charts for the data and graphs. The log created from the weather channel for your project should also be included as your lab data.

[Solved] Using New Functional Language

[Solved] Using New Functional Language

Successful discussion participation requires an inquiring attitude and thorough preparation drawing on critical reading skills. As a critical reader, you should be able to: (a) prepare annotations and recognize how and why the essential elements in a text are connected; (b) identify assumptions and implicit meaning in the text; (c) determine the author’s stance and use of language, (d) ask critical questions in response to the arguments presented; and (e) share a personal reflective response.

Critical Reading

To prepare for this assignment, you will first read and annotate Hagel III (2021) and (Gordon & Martin, 2019) as separate assignments to prepare for discussion.

  • building on and extending your peers’ responses;
  • diplomatically critiquing the arguments and ideas of other participants referring to the text;
  • and using new functional language, such as seeking clarification or interruption;
  • taking on the role of a lead discussant when appropriate.

You should then upload this video to Discussions for the instructor to review.

Writing

At home, you should view the video and, as the final task of the reading-based in-class activity, write a paper of 500 to 700 words addressing the following:

  • a self-evaluation of your reading process;
