Part 2

What is a scholarly source?

The Callahan library has a great online data base to help you locate scholarly articles. You can search this data base by the key words in your research topic. See the link below for tutorials to help…..

For this week’s homework assignment, you will be selecting 10 Scholarly sources about your topic.

Please Note* If you cannot find 10 sources, that should be a red flag for you that your topic is not a viable research project, and you may need to amend your study. However, don’t throw in the towel if you are really passionate about the subject. Use other search engines like Google Scholar etc., to find other information about your topic, and/or change around the words you are searching, to see what response you get. This activity is part of the research process.*

Once you secure 10 sources, you’ll then need to synthesize them. To synthesize your articles follow these steps:

Read the article

Note the abstract (what the study is about, what the researcher did, and what results it produced)

Note any wording that stuck out to you, the unknown about your topic, that made you go hmmmmm….

Note any limitations and/or need for future research.

Then, bring together those elements to write a short summary describing that article and how it relates to your study.

Example:

Article 1.

Conduct Problems Prevention Research Group. (2010). The Effects of a Multiyear Universal Social–Emotional Learning Program: The Role of Student and School Characteristics. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 78(2), 156–168. http://doi.org/10.1037/a0018607 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

This article discusses the positive benefits of introducing a school-based, 3-year

SEL program to elementary school students and seeks to understand how student

behavior combined with the environment affects the outcome of such a program.  The

study specifically investigated the impact of socioeconomic status and student

characteristics, such as gender and behavior deficits including aggression and

hyperactivity.

[Solved] Students Posts Either Agreeing

[Solved] Students Posts Either Agreeing

What is the “nature” vs. “nurture” debate?  Apply this debate to a famous person. Do you think nature influenced them more, or nurture? In what ways? Choose a famous or infamous figure (it could be Barack Obama, the Unabomber, Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, Jack Kevorkian, Gandhi, Oprah, Donald Trump – anybody where you can find good biographies of their life online that talks about their early childhood), and using information from their biographies, discuss whether you feel their family and environment played a role in who they became. Do you think genetics/heredity played a role? (If it is someone who is a basketball player, you may discuss how genetic height influenced their fame). Respond to two other students posts either agreeing or disagreeing with their ideas and why you agree or disagree.

[Solved] Name Several Things Sam

[Solved] Name Several Things Sam

Sam wanted to present a speech on medical errors. He has procrastinated. Two days before the speech, he realized that no matter how hard he worked, his speech would be weak, and he could not do it justice. Instead of choosing a less technical topic or narrowing to one specific kind of medical mistake, he decided to push through it. He could make up for the scant and superficial content by wearing hospital scrubs, borrowed from his brother-in-law, and by sliding his glasses down his nose to make it easier to see his notecards and to match the stereotype of a health care provider.

1. Did Sam treat the audience with respect?

2. Name several things Sam should have done differently.

3. What would you do if you were Sam’s instructor?
