Choose an organization with which you are familiar or one in which you have an interest. Research and analyze the organization’s human resource management programs, policies, procedures, or initiatives. Evaluate their effectiveness and select a program, policy, procedure, or initiative which you believe needs to be changed.

 Brief Policy Presentation

 Pretend you are a hospital counselor in a meeting with the  administration. A presentation is given concerning how there seems to be  a high-stress level at the hospital that is negatively affecting many  employees’ health. You have been asked to create a policy brief  presentation that shows the negative effects on the mental and physical  health of the employees. The purpose of a policy brief is to show  research concerning an issue/problem along with recommendations. This  information is to be used in order to make an informed decision on these  issues and how the administration can reach out to help their workers.  Write this assignment as if you are actually giving a talk to the  Hospital Board Members. 

 Create a Policy Brief  directed to the administration explaining the mental and physical health  issues due to stress along with your recommendations on how the  hospital can help.

Scenario:
You are the director of a center with  eight teachers, three assistants, and four volunteers. Although you hold  regular monthly staff meetings, your staff engages in little outside  professional development, and you would like to encourage them to take  more training opportunities. At your next staff meeting, you plan on  presenting a short training about the importance of ongoing professional  development that will motivate staff to continue their training and  introduce professional development plans so that you can begin them with  each staff member. Finally, you will close the presentation with a list  of ideas to review with the staff regarding on-site professional  development options that the center could implement.

Scenario:
You  are a first-year teacher who is dreading an upcoming conference with  the parents of one of your children, William. The last time you met with  his parents, you brought up the fact that William needed to improve his  social skills. You mentioned that he often teased and occasionally hit  his classmates during playtime. The parents responded with raised voices  and said that he is well-behaved at home and you should do a better job  of disciplining him in the classroom—that was your job. You became  defensive, and then the parents became defensive in turn, with everyone  leaving the meeting in a huff. Your center director, having seen the  parents storm out of the room, called you aside and asked you to reflect  on how you might have handled the situation differently. She also  suggested that you reflect on the idea of “hostility as a mask.” Next,  she asked you to develop strategies for remaining calm and in control at  your next meeting. She concluded by recommending that you make a  self-improvement plan to address all three issues.

Focus Assignment

1.  Create a plan for self-improvement in which you address behaving  defensively with parents. Identify three questions that will help you  reflect on your reaction and how you can handle similar situations  better next time. Second, think deeply about the various dimensions of  hostility, and write a paragraph in which you examine hostility from a  psychological perspective. Last, write three strategies for remaining  calm and professional when you are involved in potentially difficult  conversations with parents in the future.
