There are two parts to this discussion.

Consider identifying six strategies for de-escalating  students. The strategies may be tools or techniques assisting in proactively heading off escalation or de-escalating a child who is dysregulated and/or disruptive. Consider the strategies and three-step process in the attached table below. You could also draw on techniques from the references attached or locate strategies from other sources. Consider the template to attached by way of explaining the strategy, how educators implement it, and how students utilize it. In the final column, consider critiquing the strategy by identifying potential challenges to its  effectiveness.

It is important for ELL teachers to understand assessment issues as they affect the learning of ELLs from diverse backgrounds and at varying English proficiency levels. They also need to understand the clear relationship between assessment and instruction. The pre-service teacher will assess an English language learner’s oral and written performance using the Language Assessment Scale (LAS) placement test. They will then analyze the student’s results and make recommendations for instruction.   

Description: The pre-service teacher will administer The LAS placement test, score, and interpret the data. Recommendations for instruction as well as remediation activities will be proposed. 

Directions: 

1. Introduce your task by explaining the implications of the Florida Consent Decree on assessment of ELLs. Be sure to discuss the purpose of different types of assessment and assessment issues as they relate to ELLs, including reliability, validity, limitations, and accommodations for students. 

2. Introduce the LAS test and discuss its similarity to the WIDA Access test used in Florida. 

3. Select one  ELLs in the 6th grade. One should be a fairly fluent English speaker (Levels 3, 4, or 5). The other ELL should be in the early stages of learning English (Levels 1 or 2). 

4. Administer the LAS Placement Test to both students. 

5. Score the results, analyze, and discuss the data. Describe the students’ strengths, weaknesses, and identified gaps in English listening, speaking, reading, and writing. 

6. Address implications for instruction. Use the data from your assessments to plan for instruction (language objectives) by English language skill – listening, speaking, reading, and writing for each student. Align each objective to the NGSSS and current Florida Standards. 

7. Propose other types of assessments that can be used subsequently to monitor student progress (formative), and to check for mastery (summative) including alternative, authentic assessments.

Between 3:00 and 5:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, Angela and Bridgette each woke up feeling nauseous and bloated. They spent most of Sunday sick with vomiting and diarrhea. Step 2:  In a 1-2 page paper, discuss the following:

  • Determine what food(s) you think could have potentially been the source of Angela and Bridgette’s food-borne illness.  Explain your reasoning.
  • Identify potential sources of food-borne illness for each of the meals the girls ate over the weekend.   
  • Based on their symptoms, a suspected food source(s), and the time of onset, analyze which microorganism(s) were most likely to have been responsible for their illness. Use references to support your claims.
  • Discuss any precautions that Bridgette and Angela could have done differently to prevent developing a food-borne illness. Explain your answer.

Throughout this course you will learn strategies for preparing for an interview, writing your résumé and most importantly developing your portfolio. Your portfolio is representative of who you are and the skills you have to offer as a designer. A strong portfolio will play an essential role in landing that first job in your chosen career, but first you need to decide what will be in that portfolio and how you will present it.

For this week’s project you will write a 2 – 4 page project plan that lays out a strategy for the development of your final portfolio (that will be due for the presentation). While writing your project plan consider and answer the following questions:

  • What type of media will you use to present your work: a website, video real, interactive PDF?
  • Who is your target audience?
  • What type of theme will you design around?
  • How many examples of design will be included in your collection?
  • What will you add or remove from your current collection of design projects thus far?
  • How will you begin the creative process?

Keep in mind that this project plan is your contract with your instructor. Think carefully about the type of portfolio you wish to develop and stick to your plan. You are free to modify as you move through the course but must ensure that the instructor approves of your new plans. They are industry experts, so leverage their expertise and wisdom!
