Each person owes a duty to himself or herself and to the world to study ethics and to engage in thoughtful debate about what is right, and what is wrong. It is this habit of thinking about and reflecting on ethics that will help you determine the right choices when faced with an ethical dilemma.

Articulate a moral dilemma wherein one has to show a specific virtue or virtues (it can be any virtue or virtues including honesty, courage, charity/generosity, compassion, etc.)

  • What is the moral dilemma about?
  • What virtue or virtues should be shown? (You are here selecting the best course of action)
  • Why is that virtue or those virtues to be shown?
  • How should the virtue or virtues be expressed, and why in that manner?
  • Apply Aristotle’s golden mean to the dilemma.
  • Tell us how the dilemma involves conflict moral duties (loyalty to community versus to self, professional versus familial duties, national or personal obligations).

The dilemma must be a situation in which a choice has to be made.

Phillipa Hudson is a 29-year-old female presenting today at your clinic with a positive home pregnancy test. Her medical history is negative. Surgical history is negative. Gyn history 1st menses age 12, with cycles coming every 28 days and lasting for 5 days. Her pap and std history are negative. She has been taking a woman’s gummy vitamin for the past year.

 . Case Study: Hypertension in Pregnancy
Kita Brown is a 36-year-old G1 P0 black female presenting to her local urgent care with
headache and stating her mother took her blood pressure and it was a “little higher than it
should be”. Kita has had an unremarkable pregnancy, which was conceived thru IVF. She is
currently 30 5/7 weeks pregnant and relates she has had no problem with her pregnancy. She
only takes prenatal vitamins, and relates she was on hctz prior to pregnancy for borderline BP
but stopped it when she underwent IVF and her BP has remained “pretty normal”. Sher relates
she was prescribed po labetalol but did not take it regularly as she didn’t want to take anything
that might hurt the baby.
Her initial prenatal screening, including initial labs, and third trimester CBC and glucose testing
have been normal. She additionally at her 1st prenatal visit had baseline PIH (pregnancy
induced hypertension/pre-eclampsia) due to her history of hypertension which were normal
including a protein to creatine ratio.
Upon intake at the urgent care the notes relate she appears in no apparent distress, and she
has reported fetal movement within the past hour. She denies, any other symptoms including
epigastric pain, vision changes or nausea. She states fetal movement has been normal, and
denies leaking fluid, vaginal bleeding, or contractions. She relates slight swelling and her weight
gain date has been 17 lbs. Current BMI is 25.1. BP is 162/90, pulse 82, respirations 16 and
unlabored, temperature 98.2 orally. Kita was transferred to the emergency room due to her
complaints and her gestational age.
Upon arrival to the emergency room 30 minutes later her repeat BP was 166/ 88. It was retaken
15 minutes later and was 162/92. All blood pressures were confirmed with a manual cuff. She
had no additional complaints.

All new rules and regulations, or revisions to existing rules and regulations at the federal level must, by law, open for public comment for a certain period of time. For this assignment, you will search for an active public comment opportunity that is related to public health. You will then take a position on the proposed rule or regulatory change, and support your position with research. Evidence-based advocacy is important for regulatory decision-making. You can choose any regulation, at any agency at the state or federal level to write to as long as the regulation is appropriate to allow you to demonstrate knowledge about public health policy. Commenting on a regulation that is currently open to public comment is encouraged, however, if you cannot find one currently open you want to respond to you may choose a regulation that was open for public comment within the last year or so. You are not required to actually submit your comment to the agency, though you are certainly encouraged to do so.
