Accepted research tools are demonstrated using interviews, surveys, observations, questionnaires, and more (Babbie, 2015). With Covid-19 affecting the nation, it has affected research tools. Digital interviews are now more apparent within research and have been found to enhance long-distance participation and even be cost effective, however, the downfall to this is having technical difficulties that could affect the quality of an interview (Thunberg & Arnell, 2021). This data is analyzed either quantitively, qualitatively or by both methods. As discussed in previous discussions, qualitative methods are a collection of non-numerical data to understand a concept or opinion, however, quantitative data usually relies on numerical data to prove its point (Babbie, 2015, p. 26). It is always beneficial to use triangulation, when possible, to strengthen research findings.

A research tool is the method utilized in research; however, research instrument discusses the procedures and methods used within the research too. (Research tools 1. 2021). A research tool is a tool used to measure a variable or collect information needed to answer a research question.

Part 1: The area in which I could improve the most would be the “Use of Emotions.” I gave myself scores to add up to a 20. This area could impact leadership in the way I read how my team is responding in a specific situation and how I need to address the situation. 

Part 2: I think the idea of using my emotions and the read on emotions of others is important to guide the passion and enthusiasm to the projects and work at hand. I feel like there could be a loss of traction if I have to wait for an employee to tell me their feelings, but if I am able to read a change and then ask for clarity I can move faster to a solution. I would classify this as having more empathy, but also internalizing in myself and my own emotions what is working and what is not. There are times in business to be passionate and there are times to be well-mannered and controlled. I think being able to maneuver within the two and help my team do the same would be a benefit. 

Part 3: I think the main way I can start to improve in this category is by listening and observing more. I enjoy talking, but sometimes it is important to sit back and listen to the room overall and see the theme of what is going on. By feeling the mood of the room and determine how everyone is feeling so I can respond and being solutions oriented.

The difference between research tools and instruments is that whereas instruments establish processes, measures, and means by which the study itself is conducted – more in line with research methodologies – research tools are the means themselves which researchers utilize to gather the information. Most commonly, research tools are exhibited through the use of surveys, interviews, observations, questionnaires, and other methods of obtaining social research information (Babbie, 2015). However, there are some more complex research tools, such as critical incident technique, which utilize aspects of more than one of the aforementioned research tools. The critical incident technique employs the use of surveys and questionnaires to collect data which spells out the key performance objectives of a range of disciplines. Most often, it is used to evaluate the performance and critical objectives of roles for pilots (i.e., the original implementation of this technique in 1954), health care workers, dental workers, and public safety administrators (Viergever, 2019).

                Research tools may be analyzed either qualitatively or quantitatively, the means by which is entirely determined by the nature of the respective tool as some tools are specifically designed to collect and project data by means of one or the other (Babbie, 2015). In the case of the critical incident technique discussed above, it is solely designed to be a qualitative research tool. This doesn’t, however, mean that quantitative data cannot be determined by implementing other research tools in conjunction with the qualitative data collected. But, given the nature of the critical incident technique being used to determine factors, events, and behaviors associated with a professional role, the results are necessary in a qualitative form (Viergever, 2019).

I scored pretty well in all the areas on the Emotional Intelligence assessment test. But the area of regulating my emotions could use a little work. To be completely honest I am kind of a people pleaser and I would much rather not say something than to say something and have to deal with confrontation. I don’t like tension or making people upset so I sacrifice my own happiness a lot of the time just to make someone else happy. This leads to bottled up emotions. Having this area under control is very important as a manager because I know there will be times as a leader that there will be people that will not always be happy with me because having to be a leader. As a leader you can not lead off of emotions or feelings but by what is morally and lawfully right and what policy says. But even outside of management, having your emotions regulated is very important to maintaining your happiness.

 I believe the first step to me fixing this area is working on communication. I need to get more confident in expressing what I am thinking and feeling. As long as I do this in a respectful manner, that is what is important. Another thing is I have to remind myself is that I can not control how the other person responds. If I have done nothing wrong and they choose to be mad I have to let that go and not harbor those feelings. I can not please everyone, and that is just a fact I to face. Although I didn’t score low in this area it was lower than my other areas on this assessment. So I do think it needs some attention.
