Why is this part called a brainstorm? You are being asked to come up with many ideas rapidly so you do not get too caught up in details – just get ideas flowing and receive a completion grade for your, loosely based, theoretical ideas.

Connect it to the content of the class!

The sketch a solution assignment must contain linkages to the theory or model studied in the class so far. It is up to you to decide how to connect the theory or model to your Crazy 8s ideas and the sketches. We are focusing on the social levels of influence for this topic. You can still have individual behavior ideas but the main point you want to explore is how social contexts can influence the case study behavior.

Have fun with this, make meaningful connections between the course and your understanding of using theory to develop solutions.

The physical work:

Difficulty level: medium 

Grade: 20 points (as long as you complete and follow directions, you will earn the points)

Self-Timed: 8 minutes (use your phone, computer, or other timer and set for 8 minutes -no more, no less)

What I want you to do: Set a timer on your phone, a kitchen timer, or use a free timer found on the Internet. Come up with eight ways to solve the problem. No more or less time is given. Use all 8 minutes. 

Why: This activity gets you to think past your first idea, and encourages you to get ideas out throughout the socioecological model (individual, community, organization, society & policy level).

Suggestions & tips for creating your sketched list

Fold the paper into 8 sections, or fold in half 3 times to get the same effect. 

You can use pen and paper or draft this up on a Google Doc. 

Be sure to give plenty of words so the viewers understand your idea (this may take a few extra minutes to refine after the timer stops).

You do not have to be an artist to create your list, sketch whatever you can, it will work perfectly to get the point across.

Spend about one minute on each idea, then move to the next.

• Name one social welfare program (local, state, or federal) designed to address poverty, drawn either from the course resources or further research.
• Identify and explain the program. Describe:

 An educator is also the baseball coach at the school. Each year new uniforms must be ordered to replace the previous year’s uniforms. A local sporting supply vendor knows this and begins to send the educator emails asking for their business. The vendor then extends an invitation to the educator to come to the sporting supply shop and while at the shop the vendor offers the educator $500.00 of free merchandise in exchange for the school’s baseball uniform business and another $500.00 in free merchandise for each coach, they convince to switch their business to the vendor. How might you address this situation appropriately? Include evidence from the Model Code of Ethics for Educators and Professional Dispositions of Learners.

As a human services professional, preparing for the ethical issues that could emerge in various organizational and situational contexts is helpful. An effective plan for these occurrences includes evaluating prior legal and ethical situations that other human services professionals have experienced out in the field. In this assignment, you will have the opportunity to consider in greater detail the ethical dilemmas counselors encounter by critiquing the case studies discussed in your book.

 

See pages 220 to 221 of the McGrath textbook on the rise of Enlightenment in Western Europe, especially in Protestant areas, especially in Calvinist areas. At the same time, Enlightenment did not seem to flourish in areas of Roman Catholic Europe, and it goes without saying that the Enlightenment did not arise in Eastern Orthodox realms. 

Write 300 words on why you think Calvinist Protestantism had a greater affinity with the so-called ‘Age of Reason’ of the Enlightenment. Why do you think Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism proved to be more resistant to radical rationalism than Reformed Protestantism?   

1. Give a brief review or summary of the growth of the Enlightenment perspective in predominantly Protestant areas of Europe, from chapter 4, pp. 220 and 221.
2. Give your own reaction to the idea that the Enlightenment took root and grew in primarily Calvinist areas.
3. Do you think that this might indicate that certain types of Protestantism over-emphasized rationalism to the exclusion of mystery and revelation?
